What is the minimum number of people you need to play four deuces 2? And which are the essential characters?

The minimum is 10, as specified on the game page. The required guests will be in your Guest List Worksheet. I cannot post those anywhere, as we do not want anyone to know if they are a main or a secondary character. It is important that this booklet be used to assign your characters.

Is it 5 males and 5 females? I have ten guests but they may be 6 women and 4 men. Are any gender neutral?

Yes, it will always be split evenly, as the majority of parties consist of couples. None are gender neutral, but you could have a female play the Inspector.
